"Patti,
they burned down La Mere,
They burned
it down"
"So they burned it down, so build another one. Don't go on to me that they burned it down, BUILD ANOTHER ONE. YOU'RE THE ONLY ONES THAT ARE GONNA DO IT"
Patti Smith, April 28th, 1978 at a Lincoln Park concert the day after the first Punk Disco in the country, Chicago's La Mere Vipere, was burned

Many punk clubs opened and closed in Chicago during the 1980s in response to the rock queen's urgent call for action. The hard-core Oz, venerable O'banions, and successor to the punk rock throne, Exit, became the new refuges and occasional battlegrounds for punks. Social outcasts rechristened themselves as Rover, Nasty Nazi Nancy, Phill Thrill, Markie Masochist and other punk aliases. Short lived clubs London Underground, Ricky Rats, and the Dead Club germinated in the ashes of La Mere joining their longer lived cousins as punk rock hangouts. Safety pins, leather, bondage gear, dyed hair and D.I.Y. hairstyles rebelled against the disco fashions. Home made antidotes to the insipid musical vacuum that disco left in its wake were administered by local punk bands The Effigies, Naked Raygun, Big Black, Strike Under and others who were sometimes joined by touring legends including Husker Du and Black Flag.
This web site has been inspired by a book and CD in progress covering the history of the Chicago punk scene. This Chicago punk cyber-oasis will continue on long past the release of the book, preserving memories for those of us that were there, sharing them with those that weren't, and creating new ones on the bulletin board. Feel free to add your stories, discuss, remember, and argue. View the pictures, read about the bands, fanzines, and places that made up the scene. This web site is the culmination of the work of many people. Please send all correspondence about the book or this web site to Ed Generate. If you know how to contact any of the people on the MIA list on the bulletin board, please contact us.
